This page is designed to share information about our struggle to gain equity for our unique children and their learning styles in a public education system that is designed primarily to teach a single type of learner, and which is increasingly sidelined by fiscal and philosophical issues that challenge the core of its collective existence. We are especially interested in unique learners, and the talented people who teach them, their families, and our shared value as human beings. We seek the end of discrimination, the end of seclusion, separation, and isolation, as well as an end to chemical and physical restraints that are commonly used to assault our children and our unique interpretations of the world.

Ooopsie, or the Great PUSD Naked Selfie Disaster

Dance Monkey Dance
I have been in Europe recently. In fact, that is where I am writing from. I have been here a week or so, and I expect I will be here four weeks later. That is, of course, unless something happens that derails those plans.
Every night I perform music since the digital camera phone became predominant in our world, I have been filme, photographed, and uploaded . I am approached, on an average, of ten times a day to pose with a complete stranger for a photograph. Think of it as a digital autograph. It is generally uploaded so that the stranger can show their friends an exotic American chimpanzee. I don’t mind. Too much. Except when they ask for it and I am eating. Or sleeping. Or doing my monkey business at the toilet.
I am also videologged in my chimp environment with other chimps playing rock music. These are also uploaded. Generally with mixed results. Sometimes the audio is horrible. Sometimes the picture is blurry. Sometimes the world gets both. I never really know what is uploaded, who will see it, or what purpose it may serve. I just have to hope it capture me in a semi-reliable light and that I am only coming across as half a wit, and not a complete and total idiot.
It is what it is. Because of that, I have to sit tight with the knowledge that at any time, on any date, I could be called to the mat by any number of people in my professional and personal life to answer for something I have done or said. That means any parent, student, colleague, superior, inferior, fan, or instigator can ask me about my behavior on any given day or time about over ten thousand videos, recordings, photos, interviews, blogs, quotes, and other snippets of my public life over the last 35 or so years. That is a great deal of miles.
I am a public figure, and a public servant. It is part of the territory marked for me by the other chimps. All I can really do is to sniff, shrug, and carry on. Bananas are my target, and I am always finagling how I can find more.
My Collegiate Chimps
Which brings us to the, um, meat of the matter here.
Sometime earlier this month a teacher at Muir High School in the Pasadena Unified School District was caught with his pants down.
Literally.
Now, I am not sure where, or how to continue here because there are so many directions this indiscretion can go. So I suppose I should just shoot straight ahead. From the hip, so to speak.
This teacher, a biology teacher I assume, was taking physiology to new heights. And beyond. There he sat, in a- um- handful of poses with his number one on proud display.
Now, I’m not offended by such a shot. Ater all, I had to endure high school locker rooms like everyone else. But I never had to look at anyone’s junk like it was put out on display, and certainly not a teacher’s.
What I am getting at is this- it didn’t bother me. Just another picture of a dummy who couldn’t keep his pride in his pants. I see that kind of idiocy all of the time.
But this indiscretion had a price tag attached to it. And the cost hasn’t been realized yet. And the Pasadena Unified School District is trying to put a lid on it. Good luck with that.
Groupon, Groupoff, Group Email
So. These five picture get sent from a computer account belonging to the teacher, and are sent to a number of PUSD recipients. Teachers, administrators, top brass, and students. The email was then distributed to others. I believe I have an email of the third or fourth generation.
In other words, it got around.
Now everyone knows what the biology teacher is packing.
A Polite Response
The Pasadena Police Department investigation has, to my knowledge, simply delegated this to a computer email hack, and left it at that. As for the Altadena Sherrif, who knows. But the response seems to treat it as a simple hack or revenge porn attack. In other words, someone hacked the teachers computer and account, and then sent it out in a mass mailer.
That is a pretty horrible thing to do to someone, let’s be clear on that. No one deserves to have their personal diary made public. That’s pretty messed up.
Clearly, he may have pissed someone off, and they lumped him up for it. Hell hath no fury like a lover scorned, and all that jazz. He got learned a horrible lesson about trusting the wrong person or people and maybe left himself wide open. Or  maybe he was just stupid and left it on a unsecured computer. Who knows.
But in typical high school form, it spread like wildfire.
The police response was, put simply, to be expected.
They only use the internet to troll Facebook in order to catch people like Anaheim James (click here). Investigating the distribution of nude pictures to school employees and minors is not investigation worthy. Hell, it’s hardly newsworthy.
Yet.
The PUSD response has been equally noteworthy in its blaise, whatever, sort of way. Former Superintendent Jon Gundry- who has his bags packed and couldn’t close them fast enough to get the hell out of Dodge- has released a quick apology to the first recipients of the email.
An inappropriate email message was sent to numerous email addresses from a Pasadena Unified School District account on Thursday, July 10. If you received this email, I would like to apologize for any harm this email might have caused and want to assure you that we are working with the relevant authorities to investigate the matter. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact PUSD Director of Human Resources Jose Alarcon at (626) 396-3600, ext: 88778.
Anyone else who received it doesn’t get an apology. That is beyond the scope of the district’s interest or responsibity, I suppose. Parents of students who may have also received the email have not been notified. This seems to be a more than slight oversight.
I mean I know I’m scarred by this image myself, but not by King Ooopsie’s photo essay and email. I'm scarred bu the whimsy of a response, and the typical PUSD "Who's on First?" attitude about it. No apology needed for me. No apologies for anyone else, either. But a reasonable explanation would be nice.
No reprimand- or if there is one- we’ll never know. Union politics, no doubt. No moving the teacher to another school. Probably for the same reason. He has done nothing wrong, technically, so why move him involuntarily.
One district spokesperson likened it to teen sexting. I beg to disagree here. The teacher is not a teen. Teens who sext one another are generally willing participants. When they’re not, then it could be considered a crime. Willing, or not, tranferring images of minors is a crime, and one that minors can also be prosecuted for.
Tranferring images of an adult to a minor is also a crime. The person who sent this email should be vigorously pursued and prosecuted for more than just hacking into a computer or an account.
The only crime the teacher himself is guilty of is being an idiot.  Either he was stupid for leaving these images in his computer, or he was stupid because someone he may have trusted made public some personal information. He was an idiot for taking the damn things and leaving them accessible to whomever did this. Those aren’t prosecutable crimes. Just something tht shows foolishness, lack of discretion, and bad luck. On his part.
The crime is that someone did this to him. That someone accessed his private life and made it public. That someone intentionally spread anarchy into and through the district mail chain- and that the district filters didn’t catch it. Whether this was a viral hack or an act of intentional hatred is moot. The outcome is the same.
What was done to this man is wrong, and it needs to be vigorously pursued and denounced. That can be done without accepting any liabilty or blame on the part of PUSD.
Pussyfooting around, or trying to play it down is not enough.
A Quick Overview of the media Coverage
The Pasadena Star News (click here), local television affiliate KTLA (click here) and LA Times (click here) have all covered the story. Hell, even the journalist Renatta Cooper stores in her political back pocket over at the Pasadena Weekly has covered it (click here) in the aptly titled double entendre, Junk Mail.
From the Pasadena Star News article
Pasadena Police Commander John Perez said several people who received the email called the Police Department that day, which prompted an investigation.“We don’t have anybody in custody. We do have leads,” Perez said. He didn’t say who they suspect as the culprit.Perez said Rosa is not a suspect.
“We did talk to him, and we determined he was likely not the sender,” Perez said.
Police don’t know the motive and haven’t narrowed down from where the email was sent.
PUSD spokesman Adam Wolfson said district officials notified police when they learned about the message.“We let Pasadena PD know because of the content of the email and because minors were on the distribution list,” Wolfson said.
Perez said he knows the sheriff’s Altadena station also got calls from email recipients.
From the Pasadena Weekly
A California “revenge porn” law passed in 2013, made it illegal to distribute sexually explicit photos that belonged to another person who expected the images to remain private. The crime is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. If the victim, including the recipient of the images, is under the age of 18 or the defendant has a previous conviction for revenge porn, then the crime is punishable by up to one year in jail, a fine of up to $2,000, or both.
The incident has left district officials scrambling to resolve the matter.
The Buck Passes Here
The computer and smart phones have become like a digital gossip machine. I would call that bullying, myself, and I would go one further as to say it is rampant in PUSD. I know first hand, my family were victimized too. The district’s response was that it wasn’t under their control what people in the community do.
That’s the problem here. No one is ever responsible for anything. People are chewed up and spit out in PUSD and the general response is so ineffective and weak that there is no right or wrong any more. It is the wild west, and everyone is armed except the sheriff.
The teacher has- rightly or wrongly- turned into a total bufoon. His gear will be drawn and distributed evertime he annoys a student or colleague. There will be no reprimands for this behavior as the bullying enters the next ugly, ugly phase. And it will.
The reason? No clearly stated position on bullying and the consequences associated when it occurs. It will be hushed up, swept under a carpet, and will remain the elephant in the room.
The Community’s Responses
The responses from the community came pretty quick. The students seem mostly concerned that he will be fired. That isn’t likely form the district’s response to the matter.
One Petition titled Save Mr. Rosa: To help Mr. Rosa have a fighting chance to save his job is at Move On (click here) and had over 489 signatures at the time of this writing. The background given was rather vague:
"Mr. Rosa is one of the most professional teachers I know and I would hate for a great teacher to lose a job based on a mistake that may have been an accident. He's taught me so much and I don't want a teacher who has impacted lives to be turned down because of a mistake. Considering John Muir High School has a bad reputation, he's one of the best teachers who cares about the students and actually shows that he wants to be there."
Now, granted, there is nothing to indicate these signatures are 100% reliable, and in fact I found a few repeats, as well as a few that would be hard to verify as legitimate. Then there were some just plain funny signatures. I am sure that Olaf the Snowman and Fistum are probably not their real names. Tina from Pasadena probably is a real name.
In any event, there were many positive responses. Clearly he is a teacher who is loved and respected by his students. He is clearly respected, though the level of understanding regarding the pictures, the job, and the quamire this teacher is sunk in was varied. Some of the quotables
"This a personal and embarrassing attack taken against Mr. Rosa not to mention evil. DO NOT FIRE this man. This is also an invasion of his privacy."
"I hope they catch the person or people who did this. What a horrible nasty thing to do to someone. Good Luck."
"Everyone has a personal life and should be respected always. People from all walks of life take nude pictures and have an intamate life."
"Mr. Rosa, deserves his Teaching position. He really is, a true Professional. I don't know the rumors, but I have experienced, that he delivers a fantastic, and fun education, especially to the freshman classes that come in. He has positively impacted the lives of MANY, MANY, MANY STUDENTS, and he's great at dealing with trouble makers. He is rigid enough to handle the slackers, laid back enough to give those that honestly try a second chance, and he is able enough to give advanced students a real challenge and push them. He knows how to handle a class full of clowns, and I've witnessed him handle all kinds of situations that many other teachers would have been unable to handle as effectively; which I believe, at a school like Muir, is a valuable necessity that it cannot afford to lose. He genuinely cares about his students, and I remember his classes being one of the most talked about, from many friends of mine, among several grade levels. He inspired me. He is one of my all time favorite teachers, and he's not a perv. seriously. Just meet the guy once. Don't fire him, the students deserve this quality of Teacher, and Muir needs him."
"Mr Rosa was there for me when I was attending John Muir High school. he help me through my sickness and for that I thank him. everyone makes mistakes and he deserves a second chance"
"Keep Mr Rosa on the dead homies"
"He was hacked and someone was trying to ruin his life.""Mr. Rosa is one of the best science teachers John Muir High School has ever had and it needs to stay that way. Without him there is complete inconsistency in the science department but with him there is consistency in the science department. John Muir high school students need him to succeed in our high school career."
"SAVE MR ROSA. Best teacher out there. Just because of a mistake doesnt mean he has to loose his job. He was always sarcastic in class but he was the best. SAVE MR ROSA!!"
"He's a great teacher and he does care about the kids. The incedent is very unfortunate but that is not what Mr. Rosa is about and I am sure he did not do it himself."
"He's a great teacher and he does care about the kids. The incedent is very unfortunate but that is not what Mr. Rosa is about and I am sure he did not do it himself."
"From what I know & believe about Mr. Richard Rosa, the recent event it is out of character of for him. I've known him as a co-worker for 1 1/2 year and my daughter was a student in his class for 2 semesters. He has never behaved in any way but respectful and professional towards students, staff and parents. As a former parent of a John Muir Student I'm asking that he be afforded fair treatment and that there us NO rush to judge who I believe to be is a terrible and cruel act at the hands of someone other than Mr. Rosa."
"The general sense of mistake often plagues our very existence on an every day basis and while it seems to be greater for others Mr. Rosa is a man that has been part of this and I believe that this is proof of that, he touches the lives of many of his students and it's a shame if he were let go by a mere rule of everyday life as making one mistake."

"Please keep Mr. Rosa and save his job. A mistake like that is unacceptable but it was not his fault. One mistake should not affect a life, a career, and a awhole platoon of people who loves and believes in him. He changed the lives of his students positively."
"All my life hated Biology! All my life I failed anything related to science and since then I believed that science will never teach me anything. But I had Mr.Rosa as my Biology teacher on my first year here in United States and he changed my prospective of Science. He was passionate about his class and teaching his students. I loved and enjoyed Biology! He was a great teacher and I believe he still is. He will touch his students heart and he will help them and teach them to become a better student. Keep him and let him have his job! We all make mistakes, we are human being. It is part of life and I really hope and pray he gets to keep his job!"

"Save mr rosa he's a innocent man. He didn't harm anyoneHe's human like EVERYBODY else on this earth , !! & he's getting judge by doing something on HIS SPARE TIME , & a idiot wants to put pictures out there like that & parents & stuff want him fired what if that was you ? You would want somebody to help you & believe you , !! It's 2014 people are exposing EVERYBODY , !! . Don't take it out on him because some random wants to be stupid because they eat off of someone else hurt. I'm pretty sure he's already embarrassed & may not want to go back to muir so don't fire him."
"I graduated muir in 2012 I was one of Mr Rosas first students, and I can truly say he has impacted my educational career . He is very good teacher because he is easier to talk to and relates more to the student cause there's not a big age gap. I was in his pre- calculus class and even with such a tuff subject he was able to teach very well. I don't think he should be fired because other people thought it would be funny to play a prank on him."
A Class Trip to the Zoo
Over the years I have taken my class to the zoo. Granted, my students are in elementary school, so my discussion here may be a bit of a stretch. Regardless, when you go to the zoo, you have to be prepared for the things animals do. And, yes, they do. If you are a professional you handle the situations discretely and quickly. If you don’t, or can’t, you will lose control of the class, and the conversation quickly. If that happens, believe me, you are toast.
So you get on the tightrope, and you balance.
“Oh, you heard that?” when the rhino let’s roar a rhino fart. “That was loud, and yes, it is funny” and you move on. All the while trying to keep a straight face because, you have to admit it. Rhino farts are funny.
The pooping giraffe. “Oh, I know, all animals poop. But I don’t see a toilet in there, and I know there aren’t any in the wild. That must be how they take care of their businsess” and move on.
Every single animal in the zoo that licks itself. And licks itself. And licks itself. And licks some more. “Oh. That. That is grooming. Animals sometimes do that to keep clean”  and move on.
The ambitious flamingo. “Huh. Well. That is mating. It’s part of the life cycle” and you move on.
There was one particular adventure I recall where I made the decision to sit thirtfive kids across from the chimp enclosure. It seemed like the logical thing to do. After all, they were tired, and if I had to hear “I’m hungry” again in the hour, I think I would have invited a lion over for lunch. So I made an executive decision, and sat the kids on the nice ampitheater style benches facing the chimpanzees. It was designed, after all, for snacking, resting, and watching our simian cousins.
Everthing went fine. For a while. The chimps socilized, goofed off, and generally made monkeys of themselves, The children laughed, ate, socialized, and generally made monkeys of themselves, too.
Then it happened.
First, one chimpanzee decided he was Inspector Gadget, and started to play with his gear. And to share this with anyone, man or monkey, who cared to observe. It was getting to the point of obnoxious when a second chimp screeched at the exibitionist. Only then did the chimp on display come to the conclusion that it was time to move on.
He left.

Sound advice from one chimp to another. Sometimes a fresh start is a good idea.

Bravo, Sierra Madre (a reminder.)

Hello Sierra Madre Families!
Bravo.
I would like to share with you what happened to my son at Sierra Madre Elementary School, and hope you will read it with an open, but critical mind. If you choose to pass judgement on me, or my child, I promise you won’t be the first.
I want to share our experience with you. I have lived in Sierra Madre for 20 years. With my hands, I rebuilt the house I live in. All three of my children were born here, and have lived here their entire lives. They all three had attended Sierra Madre Elementary.
I realize we may seem stand-offish. We don’t try to be this way. It is simply the way that we are wired, and we have no more control over that than we have over the color of our skin. If we were a different ethnicity, or a different culture, then perhaps we would have a special club at school, and we could be validated in some vague, unimportant, and superficial way. Alas we aren’t, and we don’t.
My youngest child began school at Sierra Madre when he was four years old. He had great potential. His speech was difficult to understand (“it’s developmental, it will improve”) but he had excellent intellectual abilities and a happy, outgoing personality. His speech, however, and his inability to recall names and retrieve words made simple communication difficult. He used the only tools in his toolbox- he poked people to get their attention to communicate.
We were hesitant to place into school, but were advised that this would be good for him. As a preschooler, however, his communication mode- the poking- was immediately identified as aggression. He was subjected to “time-outs.”
This was compounded by two more factors, the first is that he began to have increased difficulty with sensory regulation, and then his grandmother began the painful process that comes compliments of Stage 4 cancer. He began to withdraw as his grandmother became increasingly ill and died.
My son, who could not articulate what he was going through, began to hide under tables. This behavior was immediately treated with punishment. He was timed out in the bathroom, restrained in 3-4 point holds, and treated with indescriminate aversive and punitive consequences without the benefit of compassion, understanding, or appropriate behavior intervention. Yes, your principal knew. So did the District Office. And yes, there were witnesses, I saw it, and perhaps maybe even you did.
We were not passive, nor quiet. We were on the phone with specialists and administrators all the way up the ladder. We were fair. We wanted to believe the staff needed support. If it was your child, would you have called Child Protective Services? We didn’t. We called the PUSD special education providers, sent multiple emails, and demanded (yes, demanded) appropriate support. What we got instead, just like our son had gotten, was a label. Trouble-makers.
He managed to fumble through two years at Sierra Madre with a hodge-podge of services, none of them truly designed to meet his needs, and we were treated by the staff as pushy, demanding, and disatisfied with anything. My son held it together, but it became increasingly apparent that his autistic-spectrum-like needs were not being met, and the district’s inept programs were insufficient for meeting his needs outside of a blended, or parallel education program.
So what did they do?
In September, 2010, he was dumped into a straight Grade 2 classroom. No pre-meetings, no educating staff and parents, no disclosure of any information to us to help with transition. Nothing.
We had done everything we could to provide the staff with supports, and we notified the teacher to follow his program. I know that she did not. As his behavior began to escalate, we were told nothing but “Everything is fine.” In other words, “back off, we have it handled.”  So, after two brush-offs from the teacher, I backed off.
At the beginning of October I brought my son to school. He resisted and began to run in circles. His aide brought him to a storage room, where he ran in circles for approximately 90 minutes as his aide tried to get ahold of a district support provider to take over for me. I waited, and I waited. And as I waited I realized that, “This is it, no doubt about it. He has autism.”  The aide could see that I was pale and assured me it was OK to leave, which I would not do, and after 90 minutes, his RST finally arrived.
I walked home, laid down on my kitchen floor, fell asleep. And then I had a heart attack.
I did as the doctors suggested, and took it easy. I heard absolutely nothing from the school and I assumed that things were OK. I had been told of a couple of insignificant incidents, but no red flags- nothing that would cause me, a veteran teacher, any alarm.
Around the third week of October, however, things started getting odd. I was notified- by my son- that a police escort had been provided to take him to school, and then I was contacted directly regarding a police incident filed against my child. I sat, disbelieving, as a report was read to me, and then I was notified by the school principal that my child had been punished for this report, retroactively.
FOR HIS PROTECTION, I removed him from school the next day as events began to unfold. Some of these events have been verified by the Office of Civil Rights, and by PUSD. OCR has found insufficient evidence in my assertions in regards to the district’s knowledge of the evnts that transpired. I will, of course, file an appeal, and I will bring it to the Department of Justice. If this was your child, I hope you would do the same.
Fom the report of OCR,  it is established that a group of parents met in the cafeteria to discuss my child. The district additionally received three letters from parents stating that their children had been physically hurt by my child. These letters were produced shortly after several parents had approached the principal expressing concern about the safety of their children. The District was aware that a public park was used by a group of parents to discuss my child. On October 21, a police report was filed, and this report alleged assault the prior day.
Wow.
So let’s recap, and call this what it is: an organized lynch mob, coordinated by parents at Sierra Madre School, against a 7 year old. Where I come from, this is called bullying.

Sometime in October, 2010, after I had a heart attack, my son allegedly began to escalate in negative behavior. Really? Ya think a 7 year old with autism and communication challenges might lose his mind just a little when his father is in the hospital, and could die- just like his grandmother did?

PUSD staff and administration did not provide us with a single incident until October 22, after police were involved- so we had no idea there was a problem. No meetings, no phone calls, nothing. If you were

Please note, the words that echoed through the notification I received on Friday, June 2, 2011 from OCR were these: SEVERAL parents, a GROUP of parents, MEETING at school, MEETING at park about student ...... do those sound like  sewing circles to you?

We have knowledge of at LEAST two other meetings, one that took place on the second floor near the art room, and one in front of the school. The District/Principal forgot to mention those. A petition was circulated, and offered to a friend of ours to sign. A culture of fear- of you, and what happened to us- keeps that silent. The petition vanished. Poof!

We have the police report, and it was two, not one, complaints. Neither of the incidents indicated an assault took place, hover.

One involved a bloody nose; the result of my child and his sensory/motor challenges, standing up and bumping the boy slightly behind him with an elbow. It was an accident, and it was documented as one. The teacher? Well, she didn’t exactly see what happened. She received the report from the children. Oh, and that my child tore up a piece of his own artwork.

The other child? Well, didn’t he have a bloody nose weekly before, and has he had them since that day? Was it necessary to treat this bloody nose so much differently?

Maybe, just maybe, there was there an agenda? Something no one wants to think about. Something that would never happen in progressive, forward thinking inclusive Sierra Madre. Maybe. Maybe there was a parent that didn’t like a little boy being in the same class as her little boy. Maybe there was a parent..... discriminating against a boy she didn’t understand. Maybe she found some other parents to discuss it with- maybe people who felt the same way? Is that remotely possible, in a place like Sierra Madre?

Well. The report filed by the parent moved the incident OUT of the classroom, where the accident occurred, and over to the PLAYGROUND where she then called it a ”punch” in the nose after an outburst. She left out the part where they were on a field trip and couldn’t have been at the playground. Ooops. Someone may be passing on information she got somewhere else.

The second report, and this one always confused me- accused my child of three incidents, but then never explained what happened to HIS OWN child. He instead discussed my child’s behavior, and what he had heard was said by staff, other parents, and the principal.

The person who reported it should have known better than to accept hearsay, and should have checked the facts before falling prey to gossip and innuendo. The incident he related could not take place the school week reported. My son was absent two of the possible five days.

So why? Has this parent ever been wrongly accused of something? Has he ever been blamed for something he couldn’t have done, because he wasn’t there? Is he so removed from his own experience, that he forgot it could happen to someone else- maybe even a child?

And you? What did you hear? Did YOU share that with someone..... maybe gossip a little? Or are you above that?

Did you say something? Anything? Maybe,  “It makes me uncomfortable to talk about another person’s child this way. I wouldn’t want someone to do that to me.”

Did you stand up to the bully? (Yes, gossip is a common bullying technique used generally by girls to tear down another girl.) Or were you passive, did you let it slide? (I don’t want to get involved. It could happen to my child next).

Did my child meltdown at school? Well, yes. He is autistic. That means there is a possibility that could happen. Did he do it all the time? Well, no. In fact, before this year he managed to have nearly three successful- though bumpy at the beginning of each- years at Sierra Madre- and two of those years without a behavior aide.

My child is at home, alone. Thanks for asking. Your empathy really shines through at these times. Yes, he’s fine. His childhood was stolen from him by a few, and it was accepted by the rest, but he’s learning a lesson about humanity he could never have learned at Sierra Madre Elementary School.

I hope the 800 API was worth your souls.

The Church of the Bleached Colon

Autism in our Society and Economic Costs
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (click here) has been collecting data on autism and incidents have been steadily increasing over the years. Currently, 1 in 68 children have been identified as being on the Autism Spectrum (dis)Order (ASD). Incidents are 5 times more likely to occur with boys (1 in 42) than in girls (1 in 189) and occur across socioeconomic and ethnic lines. The likelihood of ASD affecting another child is quite possible.

It is is highly likely that every school in the country have a population of students, some unidentified, with ASD- about 1% of the school population. Since approximately 50% of those students have average to above average intelligence. That increases the likelihood that the students will be in general education and gifted classrooms.

Additionally, the CDC estimates the cost of care for a child with ASD to be approximately $17,000 more per year than a child without ASD. Children and adolescents with ASD had medical costs of $4100-$6200 more than non ASD children. Additionally, behavioral interventions could add $40,000-$60,000 per child, per year.

The Problem with the Language of "Finding a Cure"
As Autism becomes more prominent in our daily lexicon, and it becomes more prevalent in our world, we come to the inevitable crossroads associated with its new status. On of the most annoying, and outrageous of them are the snake-oil doctors that promise a solution or a cure. This is the unfortunate result of the curebies- those people who see Autism as a disease in need of a cure. The problem many of us have with searching for a cure is that it implies superiority by the people offering to find one. It implies that there is  something broken. It implies that someone is ill and requires a cure. The whole idea needs to be re-evaluated and, ultimately, this language of a cure for Autism needs to be discarded.

Back in 2006, a blogger named abfh clarified the term curebie on her shared blog Whose Planet is it Anyway (click here). She felt that the defining characteristic of a curebie is a fanatical desperation to destroy a child's autistic traits in their entirety. Autism takes on a separate and distinct identity in the curebie mind; it is personified as a demonic foe that must be defeated at all costs. The child ceases to be seen as a sentient person and instead is treated as if he were a battleground for a cosmic struggle between good and evil.

This "find a cure theme" is a generally consistent in the language of people like Jenny McCarthy and Autism Awareness. This dividing line also can lead to some very heated arguments about the rights of Autistic children and the parents who try to change one of their defining human traits.

The Problem with the Language of "Combatting Autism"
A similar themed and philosophically consistent argument is made by TheArc of Maryland in a recent discussion on the language of "Combatting Autism" (click here). The Arc- and many others- are trying to see this language dismantled as Congress moves forward on the reauthorization of the Combatting Autism Act (CAA). Among the changes called for by The Arc's petition are to use respectful language and avoiding the word combative. Other changes have to do with balancing the research funding to include effective delivery of services for the needs of people with autism across their lifetimes.

But the changing of language has more validity than just rethinking how we refer to one another. It has to do with human values, and valuing people for their unique individuality. When people speak in terms of combat and cure, the doors are kicked open for a different kind of cure- and that is the removal of a class of people altogether.

Amniocentesis and the Decline in Down Syndrome Births
As amniocentesis becomes increasingly available and used as part of prenatal screening, so too comes the termination of pregnancies in which genetic anomalies are identified. A series of statistics and studies quoted in an Australian article Is this the Beginning of the End of Down Syndrome (click here) bring up some interesting questions and challenges to what some call 21st Century eugenics.

A Victorian study showed that only 5.3% of pregnancies with a prenatal diagnosis of Down Syndrome were continued. The study, coauthored by Melbourne area public health genetics expert Jane Halliday showed that nearly 95% of the pregnancies were terminated. This statistic is consistent in other predominantly English speaking countries with statistics of about 92 per cent in the US, and about 93 per cent in the UK.

In light of these statistics, then, it is not a far reach to wonder if the same kind of outcome is the future for prenatal identification of Autism. It also supports why the autistic community feel directly threatened by language that challenges and diminishes the value of Autism in our society. It becomes a matter of survival.

When language leans toward curing and eradicating Autism, the response of those of us who are Autistic is clear. This is more than a matter of semantics. It a matter of survival. Targeted abortion is only one threat. The murder of  the autistic is a completely different one, but every bit as frightening.

Autism and Quackery
In an age where people will allow their flesh to be eaten in order to get loaded (click here) on hard drugs, it should hardly come as a surprise that there are plenty of snake oil healers ready to sell therapies that are legal and seem legit. Jenny McCarthy's Generation Rescue, for example. Completely fucking bonkers. They make Autism Speaks look moderate in comparison. But there are more devious and dangerous practitioners out there, such as the Judge Rotenberg Center (click here).

With the CDC data stating that 1 in 68 of the population have an Autistism Spectrum (dis)Order, it should come as no surprise that the field of Autism is booming with curebies and hucksters trying to convince parents that they have the silver bullet.

Last October Forbes ran The 5 Scariest Autism "Treatments" by Emily Willingham (click here). They are Chelation, Stem Cell treatments, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, Master Mineral Solution, and Chemical Castration.  Most of these treatments are absolutely insane and put the children n danger. As one who initially fell for the thimerosal and autism connection years ago (click here), and who realizes it simply isn't there, I understand the desperation to find out why. However, thimerosal and Autism seems to keep rearing it's bloated and erroneous head. I hope these other crazy practices won't follow suit.

Pastor Bleach Enema Wants to Save Your...… uh
Currently it is a whack preacher (oooops, I mean an Archbishop) named Jim Humble and his far fetched solution- bleach enemas, for crying out loud- that have been making the loudest rumble in the Facebook World that I live in.

Humble had, uh, umm, a humble beginning as just a regular old mining engineer down in the jungles of Guyana. He's not to be mixed up with or confused with that other famous Guyana Jim (click here). He began plying around with his chemistry set and bottles of water (click here) to help a couple of workers struck down by malaria when, Eureka! He came up with the Master Mineral Solution, or MMS

Old Jim didn't get much love from the scientific world or medical practitioners, so he did what any other Guyana reverend would do. He started blowing his own horn a little louder, created a cool sounding quasi religious group called the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing, and gave his most righteous mineral soul followers fancy sounding titles like the Most High Crew and Ministers of Health. As much as I searched, I did not find anyone holding the coveted title of Imperial Butt Wizard (click here).

The Federal Drug Administration has begun cracking down on Jimbo's people (click here) apparently for selling MMS.  Rallying around butt wizard Douglas Smith and his wife who could face jail-time in the United States. Apparently the dumb-asses left the comfort of Ecuador, where they could legally sell MMS without any government interference- to do a Quixotic battle for bleach colonics in the United States.

They do it all for you.

ANTI-MISSION MANIFESTO

WITH US, NOT FOR US.
WE DON’T WANT YOUR CRUMBS.
Don’t tell us to be PATIENT, or that this is GOD’S PLAN. This has NOTHING TO DO WITH GOD. This is the bi-product  of an EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM that has FAILED OUR PEOPLE and OPPRESSES OUR CHILDREN, with BIGOTRY and SEPARATION created BY HUMAN BEINGS, and all of the PRAYING in the WORLD will NOT CHANGE THAT.  Don't blame your HATRED and HYPOCRISY on GOD.
You will find no PEACE in words like TOLERANCE. We TOLERATE things we don’t want, things that are DISTASTEFUL. TOLERANCE is just thinly veiled HATRED that seeps up like a SNAKE and STRIKES the moment the TOLERATED do or say something undesirable to the OPPRESSORS. We DO NOT WANT & DID NOT ASK TO BE TOLERATED, but seek EQUITY, JUSTICE, and RESPECT.
WE HAVE PRIDE, WE HAVE A VOICE, and YOU CAN NOT & WILL NOT SHUT US UP by feeding us DIRT.
NEVER SURRENDER, NEVER FORGIVE, NEVER FORGET. EQUITY or NOTHING.

(thanks baxter)

Dianne Feinstein Resonse from August, 2012

The bill being referred to has been stalled and vetoed, you can thank the union representing school administrators.

**********************

Dear Ms. Brandenburg:

Thank you for your letter expressing your support for the "Keeping All Students Safe Act" (S. 2020).  I appreciate the time you took to write and welcome the opportunity to respond.

As you mentioned, there is no federal law regulating the use of seclusion and restraints in schools, which have been used in some situations to address violent or noncompliant behavior by children.  A 2009 report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) found that in the last two decades there have been hundreds of cases of alleged abuse or deaths related to the use of these methods in the classroom.  State laws and regulations vary widely on this issue, and in California, it is required that teachers and administrators receive training before using restraints and that a parent receive notice after restraints have been used.

On December 16, 2011, Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) introduced the "Keeping All Students Safe Act," which would establish minimum standards prohibiting school personnel from using physical restraint or seclusion, unless such measures are required to eliminate an imminent danger of serious physical harm to the student or others.  The bill would also authorize the Secretary of Education to award competitive State grants to establish, implement, and enforce policies to meet the new standards and to improve state and local capacity to collect and analyze data related to physical restraint and seclusion.  S. 2020 is currently pending in the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.

Please be assured that I have noted your support for this bill and will be sure to keep your comments in mind should it come before the full Senate for consideration.

Again, thank you for writing.  If you have any additional questions or comments, please feel free to contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841.  Best regards.

Sincerely yours,

  Dianne Feinstein
         United States Senator
